New Boat Owner Orientation

Start With Confidence. Operate Your Boat With Purpose.

Buying a boat is exciting, but stepping aboard for the first time as the owner can also feel overwhelming. Every vessel has its own systems, layout, handling characteristics, and safety considerations. Our New Boat Owner Orientation is designed to help you become comfortable with your boat before you start making longer trips or taking family and friends out on the water.

This private, hands-on session gives you a practical introduction to your vessel, its basic systems, and safe day-to-day operation.

Program Overview

The New Boat Owner Orientation is a 2-hour onboard session conducted on your boat. We walk through the vessel with you, explain key systems, review basic operating procedures, and help you understand what to check before, during, and after a trip.

This program is ideal for:

New boat owners
Owners moving up to a larger vessel
Families who want a safer, more confident start
Owners unfamiliar with a specific boat or engine setup
Boaters who want a professional review before their first season

What We Cover

During your orientation, we focus on the practical knowledge you need to safely operate and care for your vessel.

Vessel Familiarization

We review the layout of your boat, including major systems, safety equipment, deck hardware, dock lines, controls, and access points. The goal is to help you know where things are, what they do, and what you should be checking before getting underway.

Basic Systems Overview

We provide a practical overview of the systems most owners interact with regularly, including batteries, switches, bilge pumps, fuel systems, seacocks, steering, engine controls, electronics, and basic onboard equipment.

Startup and Shutdown Procedures

We walk through a safe and repeatable process for preparing the boat, starting the engine, checking for issues, and securing the vessel after use.

Basic Operation

We review the fundamentals of operating your boat at low speed, including throttle control, steering response, shifting, situational awareness, and safe operation around docks, moorings, and marina traffic.

Safety and Readiness

We help identify required and recommended safety equipment, discuss basic emergency considerations, and review what should be checked before leaving the dock.

What This Program Is Not

This is not a full seamanship, docking, navigation, or maintenance course. It is a focused orientation designed to give you a solid understanding of your specific boat and help you begin operating it with more confidence.

Owners who want additional hands-on training can continue with our Keys to Confidence program or other on-water training options.

Why It Matters

Many new owners are handed the keys with very little instruction. That can lead to stress, avoidable mistakes, unsafe habits, and damage to the boat. A professional orientation gives you a better starting point.

You will leave with a clearer understanding of your vessel, a more organized approach to getting underway, and a better sense of what to monitor each time you use the boat.

Best For

This program is a great fit for owners who want:

A professional walkthrough of their boat
A safer and more organized first season
Help understanding controls and basic systems
A simple pre-departure and shutdown routine
More confidence before taking passengers aboard
